Green and Yellow: The Story of Two Giant Frogfish Tales Beneath the Surface #14

Tales Beneath the Surface #14: Green & Yellow

Green & Yellow

The Story of Two Giant Frogfish

Over the years of diving at SD Point in Nusa Penida, we have met countless fascinating reef inhabitants, but few have become as familiar to our team as two Giant Frogfish we simply named Green and Yellow.

For years, they lived side by side on the same section of reef. Divers joining our Nusa Penida scuba diving trips would often find them resting close together, and Nikola regularly photographed and filmed them during his dives. Seeing Green and Yellow together became such a normal part of the underwater landscape that nobody imagined one could ever be found without the other.

Then one day, a powerful ocean current swept across the reef and reshaped part of their underwater world. When we returned in the following days, Green was still in the usual location, but Yellow was gone.

The mystery did not last long. Several hundred meters away, we found Yellow settled into a completely new area of the reef. It appeared that Yellow had accepted a new home, while Green remained exactly where it had always been.

Months passed, and during our daily scuba diving trips in Nusa Penida we continued to visit both frogfish. They became part of our dive briefings and part of the stories we shared with guests. Green here. Yellow there. Separated, yet still familiar residents of the same reef.

About ten days ago, something unexpected happened. Green was no longer where we usually found it. At first, we assumed it had simply moved to a nearby coral head, something frogfish occasionally do. However, as the dives continued, it became clear that Green was moving with purpose. Slowly, as only a frogfish can, it was making its way across the reef. With every dive, it seemed to be getting closer to the area where Yellow had been living for the past six months.

Then one morning, they were together again. Whether it was instinct, coincidence, or something we still do not fully understand about these remarkable fish, we may never know. What we do know is that today we once again find Green and Yellow side by side, just as they were before.

Giant Frogfish are among the most extraordinary marine creatures found while scuba diving in Bali and Nusa Penida. Masters of camouflage, they spend much of their lives remaining perfectly still, waiting for prey to come within reach. Many divers swim past them without ever realizing they are looking at one of the ocean’s most fascinating predators.

Yet these two frogfish reminded us that even in a world that often appears silent and motionless, incredible stories are unfolding every day beneath the surface.

Perhaps that is why this story means so much to our team. Years of diving have taught us a great deal about currents, reefs, marine life, and the ocean itself. But every now and then, nature reminds us of something much simpler. Connection, companionship, and the desire to be together are powerful forces that can be found everywhere, even on the bottom of the sea.

If you join us for scuba diving in Nusa Penida, perhaps you will be lucky enough to meet Green and Yellow for yourself. We would be happy to show you where they live.
