When Green Went Looking for Yellow: The Story of Two Frogfish

Over the years of diving at SD Point in Nusa Penida, we have met countless fascinating reef inhabitants, but few have become as well known among our guides as two Giant Frogfish that Nikola simply named Green and Yellow.

For years, they lived together on the same section of reef. Guests diving with us would often find them sitting side by side, and Nikola regularly photographed and filmed them during his dives. Then one day, a powerful ocean current swept across the reef and changed part of the underwater landscape. In the days that followed, Green was still sitting in his usual spot, but Yellow had disappeared.

The search did not take long. A few hundred meters away, Nikola found her on a completely different part of the reef. It seemed as though she had accepted a new home, while Green remained exactly where he had always been.

Months passed, and during our daily dives in Nusa Penida, we continued visiting both frogfish. They became part of our dive briefings and part of the stories we shared with guests.

Green here. Yellow there. Separated, yet still familiar residents of the same reef. Then, about ten days ago, something unexpected happened. Green was no longer in his usual place. At first, we assumed he had simply moved to a nearby coral, something frogfish occasionally do. But as the days went by and more dives followed, it became clear that he was moving in a specific direction. Slowly, in the way only a frogfish can, he was making his way across the reef. With each new dive, he was getting closer to the place where Yellow had been living for the past six months.

And then, he finally found her. Whether it was coincidence, instinct, or something we still do not understand about these remarkable fish, we will probably never know. What we do know is that today we once again find Green and Yellow sitting side by side, just as they were before.

Giant Frogfish are famous for their incredible camouflage abilities and are among the most fascinating creatures you can encounter while scuba diving in Bali. They spend most of their lives sitting motionless, waiting patiently for prey, which is why many divers never even realize they are looking at one of the ocean’s most unusual fish.

Yet these two frogfish reminded us that even in a world that appears silent and still, countless small stories unfold every day beneath the surface.

Perhaps that is what makes this story so special to our team, and especially to Nikola, who followed them for months. Over the years of diving, we have learned a great deal about currents, corals, fish, and the ocean itself. But every now and then, nature reminds us of something much simpler. That connection, companionship, and the desire to be together are forces that can be found everywhere around us, even on the ocean floor.

And if you ever join us for a dive in Nusa Penida, you might be lucky enough to meet Green and Yellow in person. Nikola will be happy to show you where they live.
