Best season for Mola Mola diving in Bali

Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish) can be encountered in Bali during the dry season, usually from April until November.

The peak season for encounters is typically between July and October, when colder ocean currents move closer to Bali and Nusa Penida.

During this period, water temperatures can range between 16°C and 25°C.

In general, the colder the ocean becomes, the higher the chances of encountering Mola Mola near cleaning stations and deeper reefs.

Because conditions can vary significantly during the season, every trip is planned according to:

  • ocean conditions
  • currents
  • visibility
  • water temperature
  • diver experience level

Based on our experience and encounter frequency during the season, these are the dive sites where Mola Mola are most commonly encountered:

8. Tepekong Tunnel
9. Tepekong Pinnacle
10. Mimpang Reef
11. Biaha Wall
12. Tangked (Taked) Shark Cave

Every encounter is unique, and sightings always depend on conditions, currents, visibility, water temperature, and diver experience.

Diver requirements & experience level

Mola Mola diving is recommended for Advanced Open Water divers with good buoyancy control and previous experience in currents.

Divers with the PADI Deep Diver Specialty usually have the highest chances of encounters, since Mola Mola are often spotted at greater depths near cleaning stations.

At Zero Gravity Diving, we always organize groups according to:

  • certification level
  • diving experience
  • comfort level underwater
  • maximum certified depth

Open Water divers are welcome to join Mola Mola trips, however their encounter chances may be lower because they are limited to a maximum depth of 18 meters and cannot join deeper dive profiles with more experienced divers.

Our goal is always to combine:

  • safety
  • proper dive planning
  • and the best possible diving experience for every diver onboard.

Why small groups matter

Mola Mola dive sites can include:

  • stronger or changing currents
  • deeper dive profiles
  • colder water temperatures
  • rapidly changing ocean conditions

For this reason, small groups make a significant difference in both safety and overall experience.

With a maximum of 4 divers per instructor, we can:

  • organize groups according to certification and experience
  • provide better supervision underwater
  • manage changing conditions more safely
  • and create a calmer, more enjoyable diving experience

This approach is especially important during Mola Mola season, when conditions can vary significantly between dive sites and throughout the day.
