One Of The Ocean’s Most Extraordinary Encounters

Mola Mola Diving Bali

One Of The Ocean’s Most Extraordinary Encounters

Every year, divers travel from around the world to Bali hoping to encounter one of the ocean’s most fascinating and mysterious animals.

The Ocean Sunfish.
Also known as the Mola Mola.

For many divers, seeing a Mola Mola isn’t simply another dive.
It’s a bucket-list experience and a moment they’ve dreamed about for years.

At Zero Gravity Diving, we believe extraordinary marine life encounters become even more special when shared with people who genuinely love what they do.

Whether you’re visiting Bali specifically to search for Mola Mola or simply hoping to experience one of the world’s most unforgettable dives, our goal is simple:

To make you feel safe, relaxed and genuinely excited about every moment of your adventure.

Why Divers Choose Zero Gravity Diving For Mola Mola Diving

Every Mola Mola encounter begins long before the dive itself.

Over the years, our team has completed thousands of dives around Nusa Penida, learning where, when and how to search for Ocean Sunfish in Bali’s waters.

Our search techniques and dive planning have been developed through years of observation of local currents, water temperatures, seasonal patterns and Mola Mola behavior.

Many divers visit Bali specifically because they’ve seen our Mola Mola encounters shared by guests, instructors and dive professionals on social media.

Our entire team has been trained using the search methods developed by Branko and refined through thousands of dives around Nusa Penida.

These methods have proven highly successful and have even been adopted by other dive operators over the years.

For us, searching for Mola Mola has never been simply about finding a fish.

It’s about understanding the ocean well enough to give our guests the best possible opportunity to experience one of its most extraordinary animals.

More Than Just Seeing A Fish

Every Mola Mola dive begins with hope.

Unlike manta rays, Ocean Sunfish are seasonal visitors and every encounter feels truly special.

Some divers spend years dreaming about this moment.

Then suddenly, out of the deep blue water, a giant silver shape appears.

For a few seconds, nobody moves.

Nobody forgets the moment.

And very few divers ever forget how they felt when they saw their first Mola Mola.

Your Day With Zero Gravity Diving

Every great diving day begins long before the first dive.

From the moment we pick you up at your hotel, our goal is simple: to make everything feel easy, relaxed and enjoyable.

After arriving at our dive center, you’ll meet the team, complete any remaining paperwork, prepare your equipment and enjoy a coffee before we head to Nusa Penida aboard our comfortable dive boat.

Before every dive, your guide will explain the plan for the day, answer your questions and make sure everyone feels comfortable and ready.

Then comes the moment everyone has been waiting for.

Your first descent into the blue.

Wondering if today will be the day you finally meet the incredible Ocean Sunfish.

Between dives, you can relax, enjoy fresh fruit, snacks, coffee or tea while our team prepares everything for the next adventure.

After the final dive, we return to Sanur with new memories, new stories and very often plans for the next Mola Mola season.

Why Bali Is One Of The Best Places In The World To Dive With Mola Mola

Every year, seasonal upwellings bring colder, nutrient-rich water to the waters around Nusa Penida.

As water temperatures begin to drop, Ocean Sunfish move into the area and visit cleaning stations where reef fish remove parasites from their skin.

The colder the water becomes, the greater the possibility of encountering these extraordinary animals.

Mola Mola can appear anywhere from 18 metres to more than 40 metres depending on ocean conditions, water temperature and dive site.

Our guides search for Mola Mola at some of Bali’s most famous dive sites including:

  • Crystal Bay
  • Blue Corner
  • SD
  • PED
  • Buyuk
  • Sental
  • Toyapakeh
  • Manta Point Wall

Because every day in the ocean is different, no responsible dive centre can ever guarantee sightings.

But years of experience and a deep understanding of local conditions help us give our guests the best possible opportunity to encounter one of the ocean’s most remarkable animals.

Questions Our Guests Often Ask

Mola Mola season usually runs from July until October, although sightings occasionally happen outside these months depending on ocean conditions.

Advanced Open Water certification is recommended because Mola Mola often appear deeper than 18 metres.

However, experienced Open Water Divers also have opportunities to encounter Mola Mola when conditions allow.

Absolutely.

We strongly recommend Nitrox 28% for dives up to 40 metres and Nitrox 32% for dives up to 33.8 metres, provided you are certified to use enriched air.

Using Nitrox allows divers to benefit from longer no-decompression limits (NDL), meaning more available bottom time at depth and more opportunity to search for and enjoy encounters with the incredible Ocean Sunfish.

For many experienced Mola Mola divers, Nitrox has become the preferred choice for maximizing both comfort and dive time during deeper dives.

If you’re not yet Nitrox certified, you can complete the PADI Enriched Air Diver course with us through online theory before your trip. We also offer ProNRC (Professional Nitrox & Rebreather College) Nitrox Level I and Nitrox Level II courses for divers who wish to expand their knowledge and experience with enriched air diving.

No.

Ocean Sunfish are wild animals and no responsible dive centre can guarantee wildlife sightings.

Every encounter remains special because every encounter is completely natural.

Our entire team has completed thousands of dives around Nusa Penida and has spent years learning where, when and how to search for Mola Mola.

That experience gives our guests the best possible opportunity to enjoy this extraordinary encounter.

Supporting Ocean Sunfish Research

Our passion for Ocean Sunfish extends far beyond recreational diving.

Over the years, Zero Gravity Diving has contributed hundreds of documented Mola Mola encounters from Bali to the Ocean Sunfish Research Project, led by marine biologist Dr. Marianne Nyegaard and based in Australia.

For every documented encounter, our team records valuable scientific information including the dive site, date, time, water temperature, depth and photographic identification images from both sides of the fish whenever possible.

These records help researchers better understand the migration patterns, seasonal behavior and population dynamics of one of the ocean’s most extraordinary animals.

For us, searching for Mola Mola has never been only about finding them.

It’s also about helping future generations of divers continue to experience these remarkable encounters in Bali’s waters.
